Friends: IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions
Last updated 21 July 2026
In short
Practice questions
The examiner usually opens with something like: "Do you have a large group of friends, or just a few close ones?"
How often do you see your friends?
What do you usually do together?
How did you meet your closest friend?
Is it easy to make new friends where you live?
How to answer Part 1 questions
The goal is a natural, extended answer — never one word, never a speech.
- Part 1 lasts 4–5 minutes and covers familiar topics about you and your life.
- Answer in 2–3 sentences: respond directly, then add a reason, detail, or example.
- Don't give one-word answers, but don't over-talk — the examiner has a set of questions to get through.
- Speak naturally about your real life; there are no 'right' answers, only clearer and less clear ones.
