    How the test runs

    The same three parts, in the same order and on the same clock as the real test.

    1. Part 1

      4 to 5 minutes

      The examiner checks your name, then asks about you and two or three everyday topics.

    2. Part 2

      3 to 4 minutes

      A cue card: one minute to make notes, then up to two minutes on your own, and a question or two after.

    3. Part 3

      4 to 5 minutes

      A discussion linked to the cue card: broader questions where you give and defend views.

    • The examiner speaks. Every question is asked aloud, and a follow-up can come from what you just said.
    • The clock is kept. One minute to prepare the long turn, with a notepad, then you are stopped at two minutes.
    • Four criteria. Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammar, and Pronunciation, assessed from your voice.

    In certain respects we do, especially when it comes to basic skills we've stopped bothering to learn. If a device does something for us, our own ability tends to wither, and we don't notice until the device fails. Plenty of people can't find their way across their own city without satellite navigation, or remember a single phone number apart from their own. On the other hand, depending on tools is hardly new. We rely on cars and calculators without anyone calling it a problem, so the real question is whether we're losing skills that actually matter.
