There is no fixed number. What matters is using less common, precise words and natural collocations accurately and flexibly. A focused set of a few hundred well-learned, topic-relevant words does far more for your band than a huge list you can't deploy.

Spaced repetition combined with active recall. Review each word with flashcards and quizzes at increasing intervals, always practise it in your own spoken sentences, and learn words in topic groups so you can reach for them under exam pressure.

Less common and idiomatic vocabulary, strong collocations, and effective paraphrasing — these are exactly what the Lexical Resource band descriptors reward from Band 7 upwards.
