    How it works

    What the checker actually listens for

    Pronunciation feedback is only useful when it's specific, so the evaluation works at three levels. Segmental accuracy: are the individual sounds right, the /θ/ in "think", the vowel contrast in "walk" vs "work"? Word and sentence stress: is the emphasis on the right syllable and the right words, which matters more for intelligibility than any single consonant? And overall intelligibility: would a listener who doesn't know you follow this sentence first time? These map directly onto how IELTS examiners assess the pronunciation criterion.

    Accent is not the enemy; unclear sounds are

    The IELTS pronunciation descriptors are explicit: any standard variety of English can score Band 9. What costs marks is a sound substitution that changes meaning ("ship" heard as "sheep"), stress that lands on the wrong syllable, or flat intonation that makes questions sound like statements. The checker is instructed accordingly. It flags intelligibility problems and leaves your accent alone. If it flags the same sound across several takes, that sound is worth targeted drilling in the pronunciation library, which covers all 44 English sounds with model audio.

    Questions

    Is my recording saved anywhere?
    No. The public checker is deliberately ephemeral: your audio is used once to generate the feedback and is not stored. Your mock Speaking tests are different: each one is saved to your account with its report.
    Does tapping words to hear them use up my free checks?
    No. Hearing a word, its IPA and its slow version is unlimited and free, for any of the 126,000 words in our pronunciation dictionary. Only an AI check of a recording counts towards the daily limit.
    Should I choose British or American?
    Pick whichever accent you're modelling your English on. It sets the reference for vowel and consonant comparisons. IELTS accepts both (and other standard varieties) equally, so this is a coaching choice, not a scoring one.
    Why one sentence at a time?
    Because pronunciation improves through focused repetition, not volume. A single sentence gives the AI enough signal for word-level feedback, keeps each check fast, and makes the record-fix-re-record loop tight.
    How is this different from the speaking checkers?
    The speaking checkers assess typed answers (content, vocabulary, grammar) and can't hear you. This tool is the missing piece: it assesses only the sound of your speech. Together they cover all four IELTS speaking criteria; the Speaking Simulator assesses everything at once, from a full spoken test with an AI examiner.
