The IELTS Listening Band Score Calculator converts your raw score (correct answers out of 40) into a band score using the standard published conversion: 30 correct ≈ Band 7, 23 ≈ Band 6, 16 ≈ Band 5. The Listening test and its conversion are identical for Academic and General Training.

How Listening marking works
Forty questions, one mark each, no negative marking — so never leave a blank. Spelling counts: a correctly heard but misspelled answer scores zero, which makes spelling drill on common answer vocabulary (days, months, numbers, addresses) some of the highest-yield listening prep there is. Answers must also respect the word limit stated in each instruction (“NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS”), another silent mark-killer.
Reading the conversion strategically
The band ladder is steepest in the middle: from Band 6 (23) to Band 7 (30) costs seven answers, but from 7 to 7.5 just two more (32). If you're stuck at a plateau, diagnose by section — Parts 1–2 (everyday contexts) reward prediction and spelling accuracy, while Parts 3–4 (academic contexts) reward paraphrase recognition, since the recording almost never uses the words in the question.

Is the Listening conversion the same for Academic and General Training?
Yes — both modules take the identical Listening test and use the identical conversion. Only Reading differs between modules.
How many correct answers do I need for Band 7?
Around 30 out of 40. Band 6 needs about 23, Band 8 about 35, and Band 9 about 39. Official conversions can shift by roughly one raw mark between test versions to keep difficulty fair.
Do wrong answers lose marks?
No — there's no negative marking anywhere in IELTS. An educated guess has positive expected value every time, so a blank answer sheet line is a wasted lottery ticket.
Why did my score differ slightly from this table on a real test?
Official conversions are adjusted per test version to equalize difficulty, so a hard version may convert slightly more generously. Published tables like this one are accurate to within about one raw mark — right for planning, not a guarantee.
