- what they are like
- and explain why you admire them
Tap to start talking
Talk for up to two minutes (1:40 or more)
Your recording is used only for this check and is never stored.
How it works
- 1
Read the cue card, or press “Hear the examiner”. Choose a theme or the next card if you want another.
- 2
Press “Start 1-minute preparation” and note a few words for each point. You can start speaking before the minute is up.
- 3
Talk for as long as you can, up to two minutes. The recording stops at 2:00, as the examiner would stop you.
- 4
Read your report: the band, the four criteria, your speaking time, the mistakes, and the improved version of your own talk.
Good to know
Filling the two minutes
The long turn should fill most of the two minutes, 1:40 or more. Running out after 45 seconds is the commonest Part 2 problem, and it costs fluency marks however good the language is. Use the minute to note one or two words per point, not sentences; then tell it as one connected story (when, where, what happened, why it mattered) rather than answering the bullets as a list.
Pronunciation from your voice
A long turn is the best sample of your pronunciation, so it is assessed from the recording itself: individual sounds, word and sentence stress, intonation and rhythm, with the words that were hard to catch listed. Your accent is never penalised; IELTS marks how easy you are to understand.
