    The overview is the whole game

    Examiners are trained to look for one thing before anything else: a clear overview of the main trends or stages, in your own words, with no data. A report without one cannot score above Band 5 for Task Achievement no matter how elegant the sentences are. The strongest pattern is a one-sentence paraphrase of the task, a two-sentence overview paragraph, then two body paragraphs that group the data logically: by category, by time period, or by direction of change.

    The second most expensive habit is describing instead of comparing. “Coffee consumption was 3kg in 2000 and 5kg in 2020” lists; “coffee consumption rose by two-thirds over the period, the fastest growth of the five countries” compares, and comparison language is precisely what Band 7+ Task Achievement rewards.

    Register and accuracy traps

    Task 1 is a report, not an essay: no opinions, no conclusions about what “should” happen, and no invented explanations for the data. Tense choice matters too: past periods take past tense, projections take future forms (“is projected to reach”). The checker flags register slips and tense drift alongside the usual grammar issues, because they cost Task Achievement marks, not just grammar marks.

    Can I upload the chart?
    Yes. Upload a photo or screenshot (PNG, JPEG or WebP) of a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, process diagram or map. The checker reads the figure, checks every number, comparison and trend in your report against it, and lists each mismatch with the value the chart actually shows. Because a model reading a photo can misjudge a value, it shows you what it read: correct anything it got wrong and click “Re-check with these figures”.
    What is different about picking one of your charts?
    Our 20 Academic Task 1 charts are drawn from their data, so the checker compares your figures with the true values rather than with a reading of a picture. It is the most exact figure check available. Pick a chart and the task wording comes with it.
    Can it check process diagrams and maps, not just charts?
    Yes. Upload the diagram or map, or pick one of ours. For processes it checks the stages are complete and in order and looks at sequencing language and the passive; for maps it checks the changes you describe actually happened and looks at location language.
    Can I check a report I wrote by hand?
    Yes. Use “From a photo” above the report box: the photo is turned into text exactly as written, mistakes included, and placed in the box for you to compare with your page before checking. Words it cannot read are marked [illegible].
    How long should my Task 1 report be?
    At least 150 words. Under-length responses are penalized in Task Achievement. The sweet spot is 160 to 190 words: enough to cover an overview and two grouped detail paragraphs, short enough to leave 40 of your 60 minutes for Task 2, which is worth twice as much.
    Is the score an official IELTS result?
    No. It's an AI practice estimate anchored to the public band descriptors, useful for finding weaknesses and tracking progress. Official scores only come from IELTS examiners on test day.
    Are my chart and report stored?
    No. The image and your text are sent to the AI provider only to produce your feedback, are not stored by SpeakMetry and are not used to train models.
