Part 1 · the examiner asks

Let's talk about where you live. Do you live in a house or a flat?

    Aim for 15–35 seconds

Your recording is used only for this check and is never stored.

    How it works

    1. 1

Pick a topic, or keep the question on screen. Press “Hear the question” to hear the examiner ask it.

    2. 2

Tap the mic and answer out loud, as you would in the test: a direct answer, then a reason or an example.

    3. 3

Tap again to stop. Your answer is transcribed and marked on the four criteria in a few seconds.

    4. 4

Read “Your answer” for the mistakes, then “Improved” for the same answer at Band 7-8. Try again, or go to the next question.

    Good to know

What a strong Part 1 answer sounds like

Two to four natural sentences, about 15 to 35 seconds: a direct answer, a reason, and a small detail or example. “Do you like cooking?” → “Not really, to be honest. I can manage the basics, but I find it tiring after work, so my flatmate does most of it.” A one-word answer gives the examiner no language to mark; a prepared speech sounds memorised. The bar under the mic shows when you are in the right range.

    How your answer is marked

The recording is transcribed with the hesitations kept, then marked against the public band descriptors with the facts an examiner hears: how long you spoke, your pace, your “um”s and repeated words. Every correction quotes words you actually said. Pronunciation is judged from your voice when you speak for 30 seconds or more; a shorter Part 1 answer gets an estimate, and the report says so.

    Questions

    Is the band accurate?
It is a calibrated practice estimate from one answer, not an official score. The criteria are marked as whole bands and the Speaking band is their average rounded down to a half band, the same arithmetic as the real test. One short answer shows only part of your range, so the report tells you when an answer was too short to be sure.
    Is my recording saved?
No. Your recording is used once to produce the feedback and is not stored. You can replay it on the page until you leave.
Can I practise my own question?
Yes. Choose “Your own”, type the question and answer it. Bank questions are read aloud by the examiner; your own questions are read by your browser's voice.
How many answers can I check for free?
Every visitor gets free checks each day with no account. The page shows how many you have left. A Premium Pass raises the daily limit; there is no subscription.
